First Newsletter: Exciting News about Charting Transcendence

Earlier this year, I founded Charting Transcendence as a new kind of art advisory and guide service, informed by my deep, active, and growing passion for mapping my way through the world of contemporary art.

Going forward I would like to keep you updated with a brief email a few times per month, no offense taken at all if you choose to unsubscribe.

Charting Transcendence Together

As of early November the company will be operating in Miami full time after having been established in Marco Island, Florida, earlier this year.

There is a lot to look forward to in the coming months with Miami Art Week / Art Basel Miami Beach on the calendar December 4-10 (roughly) as well as many other exhibitions, events, and festivals all winter and spring. Please be sure to let me know if you are coming, I would love to show you around!

Miami Progressive Art Brunch (Open Gallery Weekend Oct. 2023)

Last Sunday, October 23, I visited 12 top Miami galleries in 4 hours and saw a lot of good and relatively affordable work.

Although difficult to pick favorites, my attention was drawn towards several wax-based, mixed media works by a young Cuban-American artist from Miami. The artists considers her grandmother, a practitioner of the Cuban folk religion Santeria, to be a major influence in the conception of her very colorful, abstract, and richly-layered works.

By embedding wicks in the wax, the artist evokes alchemy and transformation when the piece is lit. In the larger circular works, one can clearly see the effect of the flame. This struck me as thoughtful and evocative of a deeper narrative.

The smallest of the pieces above (and very affordable too at $1000 — 12” x 12” frame) may be “activated” at will by the buyer to effectuate its own transformation, thereby including the viewer in its realization.

Please contact me if you are interested in one of the four pieces above (the others are much larger and are priced at $3500, $4500 and $8000). This is a great way to start a collection with a somewhat unusual (for the gallery space) approach by an artist whose work I believe has the potential for greater recognition going forward.

I am pretty confident in making this recommendation, because, not only am I fairly confident in my instincts, in fact…

My recommendation from last week’s email resulted in a sale

Tia Keobounpheng, Threads No. 14 (2023), pencil, colored-pencil, thread on wood, 19”x 25” framed under museum glass.

Last week I sent out an email to most of you about a fiber artist named Tia Keobounpheng who just had a major breakout show at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. I highly recommended having a closer look at her work since I consider it extremely technically and conceptually sophisticated, not to mention absolutely unique (in my experience) in its execution and form.

Several of my subscribers responded, and one of you bought the piece pictured above. This is literally a museum piece — it hangs today, and thru Sunday at the Minneapolis Institute of Art — and surprisingly affordable given its size and intricacy.

Tia may have just a work or two left like the one above to purchase.  I’m certain her work would find a forever home with anyone who loves color, geometry, while feeling a connection to the conceptual elements of the act of threading and discovering that Tia’s practice has demonstrated.

This multidisciplinary artist is destined for greater art world recognition in 2024 and beyond, so please let me know if you are interested in one of the last pieces available to buy.

The greatest compliment you could give is referral

Please feel free to forward this email to people in your network.  I am taking on new clients and welcome you all to Miami! I also look forward to visiting NYC November 8-11 and Texas (Austin, Dallas, Houston) December 23-29.

Please keep following along — I promise it won’t be boring!
